CS OC WEEK DAY 4: TRAGEDY

beware the passage of time! it kills in more ways than you'd expect!

I just saw someone say that Tim was the only member of the batfamily who didn’t suck at math.

With the exception of Dick (acrobatics) and Cass (body language) none of the Batkids are THAT much better than the others at a certain skill

Yes Jason is a better shot

Yes Tim is a better detective

And on a technical level they’re much better

Sure

But that means that if they have a 0.001% chance of cracking a case or making a shot. There will be a noticeable difference between Tim being the character or say Damian.

Otherwise

Not particularly.

Think of each skill like a normally distributed curve okay with the mean being your average hero/olympian/hacker/genius

Right

The Batkids will be at the 96th percentile in the skill

With the exception of 1 of them being at the 99th percentile range

Unless you are writing something you can comfortably say is complex/difficult enough to warrant drawing attention to the 3% difference. It’s annoying to bring it up

I exclude Dick and Cass

Because Dicks introduction is the fact he can do something the rest of the kids can’t to the point where it’s an identifier within his own story. It’s how Tim found him, a signature only he can do.

And Cass because she is genuinely cartoonishly cracked in her own storyline and in batfamily stuff she’s borderline a mind reader

(Could also argue Jason for supernatural stuff and the all blades)

These are exceptions because yeah

If you told me Jason, Dick or Steph cracked a difficult case in a run I wouldn’t treat it as shocking information

If you told me Tim, Dick or Damian managed a tricky shot with a firearm in a dire situation (like what happens in the Grayson run) it would be interesting, surprising but like not? Shocking?

If you told me that Jason did a quadruple summersault off a building and landed on his feet I’d be confused as shit

And even WITH Dick and Cass the other kids are still FREAKISHLY good at D&Cs special skills but they both have unignorable signatures

This is a very long winded way of saying when an author simplifies a character down to

“Oh look nice flippy one”

“Smart one”

“Angry gun one”

“Pet collector”

It’s annoying because you basically ignore all the interesting overlap

Like guess what Dick literally has a habit of collecting strays (see the rabbit and 3 legged dog he lives with in his apartment in the new run)

Tim is fucking badass and is very good at dealing with explosives

Damian is canonically currently thinking of leaving the family business and no longer being a hero to maybe focus on helping people in other ways

Jason occasionally works with magic and demon bullshit

And every single one of them is a genius okay literally every single one of them could get a masters in physics, chem, bio and history in like 2 weeks flat.

Their stats are stacked

All of them know enough info to be able to do 99% of a task and yeah someone might call Tim or Dick in for detective help or Jason for muscle and restraining backup but in 99% of cases THE OTHER CHARACTERS SHOULD BE EQUALLY competent

For the "send me a character": Damian Wayne

First impression - The first time I saw him was probably in the movie Son of Batman. I remember thinking he was fun and liking him insulting Bruce :P

Impression now - He's the blorbo! I have a ton of thoughts im sure people who interact w/ my tumblr have seen but we'll say I love his character development, and how confident he is, and any writer writing Damian should keep in mind the three Cs: Competent, Confident, Compassionate.

Favorite moment: He has a lot of good moments, but rn let's say when he stops Suren from destroying the world by talking him down and empathizing w/ him (link)

Idea for a story: I have a gazillion Damian WIPs already so I'm writing most ideas for a story... IG Post R:SoB I want to see Damian and Talia interact more, and I think Talia would really challenge Damian's assumption that Damian is responsible for everything he did in the League. IDK if she'd get thru to him tho or not :P

Unpopular opinion: I don't like Robin (2021). I know thats not super unpopular on tumblr but it is in lots of other DC circles.

Favorite relationship: Damian and Maya are the best!

Favorite headcanon: He's autistic :P

I was thinking of a story where Bart and Hartley are singing/signing 'Still Breathing' to a mute, her throat was cut or voice gone I hadn't decided, OC and then Jason jumped in on Twitter, sorry X, with 'If I Surrender' and then Bruce counteracted with 'Reason To Live' and then Dick got involved with 'I Can't Pretend My Pain Away' and it just went from there. (Though everyone was using their other identities, except for Hartley and Bart.)

sad to report that it's all of your guesses, tho i see less of the 'h/cs masqueraded as jokes' stuff. but misinterpretations and exaggerations of his actions jokes, "he's boring and not popular" jokes "he steals other characters spotlight" jokes "he has no skills and any writer who claims he's better at something than another character is showing favoritism" jokes "he's too old to be robin and should be retired" jokes etc etc. in summary, stay away from the fandom. it'll only depress you.

Is it truly a fandom if the fandom doesn't make itself look like an ass to the out existence of the further fan group?

I've been around the fandom long enough to know that it has noticeably decreased, and there's a reason for that. The ones left are often so oblivious to themselves, that they just make people not care anymore. Which leaves the dastardly side effect of the remaining assholes thinking they're on to something and totally hysterical.

They don't even know how characters work.

For fucks sake a lot of the traits they loved Damian for during the destruction of his character were often plucked from classic era Tim. Which I couldn't help but notice really made them try to make no one care about even classic era Tim.

The thing I couldn't figure out though, is if they were aware that classic Tim would be a character they'd like if they didn't make fandomness seem like a gang thing, or if they were subconsciously threatened.

Like oh yes, the character that has the second longest lasting teen super hero comic book run, only behind SUPERMAN as a teenager, is unpopular.

Truly that is the fault of the character that he's no longer relevant and popular. And not a sign that how he's been written and treated is terribly wrong.

While these newer characters can't hold a single series for long, because their fandom is only loud and aggressive, not large and impressive.

It's not anything that takes the World's Greatest Detective. It's just obvious to anyone that's willing to look into it a bit.

Plus, seeing how a lot of these people try to be writers with fan fictions, eesh, you'd think they'd try to understand how good characters work. But that seems to be beyond them.

Bat boys and subject combinations they would take in secondary school

Based on my niche knowledge of subjects in secondary school

Dick: mother tongue, 3rd Lang, math, geog, biology, physics, chem, translation (what language? No idea)

sorry gym isn't a subject 😔, I think dick would be good at geography not only because he travelled a lot as a kid but because hes interested in earth and how it affects everyone around the world, like the diff kinds of water in diff places, housing and slums, different cultures etc.

I would expect that he knows physics and bio for fighting stuff, but also when he flies around the city, he's like doing quick maths to calc how he'll land, impact and all

I would also expect him to be fluent in many languages so he would breeze thru those very easily

Jason: full literature, maths, advanced math, elective history, physics, food and nutrition

What do I have to say abt lit.

History, maybe he would get bored of general history, but with classic lit I feel like Jason would actively search up historical stuff because of classic literature. He would search up 19th century articles and documentaries just so he can read pride and prejudice with period-typical knowledge.

He takes physics and amath because he would make his own weapons and stuff.

I would also think that he learnt abt food science because of his time in the streets, maybe thru his mother teaching him just in case he ends up homeless and broke, or he just decided to search up abt nutrition having developed a habit of rationing food as a kid. Yes.

Tim: computer science, math, advanced math, bio, physics, chem, econs, history

Again, what do I have to say about cs

Econs is very rarely offered in secondary but it's ok, Tim is smart he can do econs

I rly just threw all the tech subjects at Tim. It's fine. He's a mad scientist so he gets triple science

I originally gave him geog but then I realised the detective work involved in history and Tim would run thru that section so easily. He can pick up on people, their mindsets etc very quickly so he would Def do well for history.

Damian: art, math, bio, chem, full history, elect literature,

Honestly I don't know this one. I think Damian will be very on abt history, esp Asian history because wow there's a lot of Asian history. And it's his heritage so ++++

If he wants a full humans, he needs an elective humans and Damian would take full history so elect lit he gets. He can bond with Jason over classic lit and poems

Def a triple science guy bro. And Def would take multiple language subjects. And if you're triple science you're a double maths taker too.

Bruce would search up the history to stuff and be very good at the skills in history. He's a detective, of course he would do well. Actually all of them would be good, it's just if they're interested or not .

Idk enough abt duke :(( but I think he would be a more sciencey boy than a humans guy

Starts with two Cs, you can toss Hank Hall off the list instead if you really want a list of 13 people, just because Cass is in Hong Kong doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be coding her access. (Probably also should have Wendy Harris)

(Damian not being on the list is amusing given the various dynamics between Babs and Dick over their mentees at present. Cass being left off is more of an insult)

Appreciation Plushies to Found Family

Chapter 3: Plushie Power!

When Batman returned to the Cave, he was met with all of his family members.

“Talk.”, Spoiler rolled the computer chair around, fingers steepled dramatically. Then she promptly squealed and leapt at the plushie in his hand. Dick not far behind.

“Oh my god! You got CS-approved!”, Tim was in disbelief.

Jason just frowned at the large ,grey cat in a Batman costume and looked away, annoyed that he was not the only one with CS-approval in the family anymore.

Damian, if anyone asked, would vehemently deny being jealous.

Cass was the first one to the plushie, the large cat half her size was squeezed and snuggled into with a sigh. She deftly dodged all of Dick and Steph’s attempts at getting the plushie.

Duke came to Bruce, his voice amused, “Congratulations. So how did it go?”

Everyone turned to Bruce expectantly, who sighed tiredly, “They are not a threat.”

“We know.”, everyone chorused, besides Damian who huffed.

Bruce sighed again, “They are laboratory experiments. Mutant turtles with half human DNA from their father’s side. Created to be biological weapons against humanity. Luckily their father saved them when they were mere babies and raised them away from this agenda.

Tapping at his wrist gauntlet he brought up the footage from his cowl recording, pausing at a shot, “From left to right, Raphael Red Hamato, eldest, 15. Mature and responsible.”

“High praise.”

“Kid’s huge!”

“He’s an alligator snapper Todd. They are the biggest species of turtles around.”

“Awww! Look at his snaggletooth!”

“He seems like a sweetheart!”

“He looks so done!”

Bruce interjected moving the footage forward, “Then we have Leonardo Blue Hamato and Donatello Purple Hamato, twins, 14.”

A ripple of laughter went around as Raphael picked the clearly arguing twins by the lip of their shells like misbehaving cats.

“Those two look like trouble.”, Dick observed with a smile.

“ They are. Very witty yet childish. Leonardo was the instigator ninety-nine percent of the time. Raphael was the only reason they hadn’t gotten into a fist fight every other minute.”

“And I’m assuming, if the pattern is correct, that the last one is Michelangelo Orange Hamato?”, Damian said primly.

Bruce nodded in confirmation , “Yes. He is the youngest at thirteen.”

“So any idea why these kids popped up now?”, Dick asked. On the other side, Steph had succeeded in getting a turn at the plushie.

“They are from a different dimension.”

Everyone stared.

“You’re kidding.”, Jason deadpanned.

“Leonardo has some mystical abilities that allows him to open portals via his katana.” Damian perked up curiously at this. “They were experimenting with their mystical abilities when one of his portals according to Donatello “became supercharged” allowing them to breach the dimensional barrier.”

Tim hummed in thought, “That would explain the dimensional readings as well.”

Everyone was now looking at Tim.

“I was looking over the magical readings from the portal when I noticed it. It was minuscule, overshadowed by the magical reading, but still there.”, Tim elaborated.

“So magical mutated teenage turtles?”, Duke summarized.

“They are also proficient in ninjutsu, according to them.”, Bruce added.

“So magical interdimensional mutated teenage ninja turtles.”, Steph concluded. “Not the weirdest thing we have seen in our lives. At least they give appreciation plushies. Any other info we need to know about them?”

“There father is a mutated rat.”

Silence.

“Explain.”, Cass said softly.

“Yeah, I thought their dad was human?”, Tim asked frowning.

“He was. But when he was escaping the lab, he got splashed by some of the mutagen that transformed the boys. He was mutated into a humanoid rat.”

Everyone winced in sympathy. Having your entire life, your humanity ripped apart like that did not sound fun.

“So I guess their world is accepting of them?”, it was surprisingly Damian who asked such an emphatic question.

Bruce frowned which made everyone alert, “According to them, the live in an underground subway station. The only entrance via sewers. The world above them doesn’t know they exist. And they prefer keeping a low profile anyway considering their existence would be an object of fascination. Of the wrong kind.”

“So they’ve lived isolated? For fifteen years?”, Steph asked sadly.

“They recently discovered an underground city of yokai, Japanese demons. They are able to traverse it normally but the dangers usually deter them from going there too much.”

“These kids need hugs.”, Dick said seriously.

“Can’t believe it that I’m saying this, but I agree with Dick. I guess these kids were absolutely ecstatic when they learnt of the Meta Protection laws.”, Jason leaned against the table.

“Probably why they keep coming back.”, Tim concluded gravely.

“That’s why I officially granted them permission to enter Gotham.”, Bruce said.

Everyone groaned exasperatedly.

“He even got a three for one deal!”, Steph laughed.

“I guess we’ll be getting those plushies from our new brothers!”, Dick finally got his hands on the BatCat (that was its official name now) plushie.

“How did you get one anyway?”, Tim narrowed his eyes suspiciously at Bruce.

“Raphael found about the no meta rule. He gave this as an apology for accidentally breaking it.”

“………”

“He really is a sweetheart!”

“No wonder Bruce let go of his suspicions so easily.”

“The plushie is too powerful.”

“All hail the plushie!”

Bruce sighed again, but this time with a soft smile.

“So he didn’t tell you about the roasting?”, Wally asked around his milkshake’s straw.

“What roasting?”, Dick asked.

“The one where Leo and Donnie called him out on his conversation skills?”

“No! Tell me you have a recording! Bruce must’ve deleted the cowl footage by now!”

“I don’t. But Donnie did say that he records everything. Don’t know to what extent. Maybe ask him?”

“You bet I’m going too.”
